This article argues that the correct terminology should be “schematic post-Paleolithic rock art of the southernmost part of the Iberian península” and not “southern art,” as the latter is ambiguous, parochial, and unscientific. The proposed term is more precise because it indicates that it is rock art, places it within a cultural horizon after the Paleolithic, and specifies its geographical location. These manifestations, present in sites such as Laja Alta and Tajo de las Figuras, are part of a broader rock art phenomenon in the iberian península, characterized by simplified figures, symbolic signs, and schematic motifs. The text emphasizes that the unique characteristics of the southernmost part of the península should not be confused with the existence of an independent style. In conclusion, using rigorous terminology allows for a better interpretation of this heritage, comparison with other sites on the península, and promotes its proper protection and dissemination.
